When this spell is cast, the caster can cause any one non-magical musical instrument to play itself. The instrument must be whole and in a playable condition. If the caster is unskilled in Perform; Musician, the spell is cast by holding the instrument in the normal fashion necessary to play the instrument and then softly whistling or humming the desired tune. In such cases, the music is considered simple and rudimentary, but not necessarily unpleasing. If the caster has actual musical ability (at least one rank in Perform; Musician), then the caster may elect to make a skill roll to determine the quality of the performance. It is possible to take 10 on this roll, or even 20 if the spell's casting time is increased 20-fold. For wizards or sorcerers, this tune can be no more than one minute long. If the caster is a bard, the maximum duration of the tune is one minute per level of the bard (not caster level).

Upon releasing the instrument after casting the spell, it glows as if limned with Faerie Fire and levitates at the level it was released. The various parts of the instrument (keys, valves, strings, etc.) move under the control of the magic. Upon reaching the end of the song, the instrument repeats the song until stopped. For bards, any and all such dweomered instruments cast by the same caster can be stopped and started separately or together from any point in the song as a silent, free mental action. Instruments weighing more than 50 pounds, such as pianos, harpsichords, pipe organs and the like do not levitate, but instead stay at rest on the ground.

The Ghost Pipes stop playing when any living creature touches the instrument. The radiance fades and the instrument slowly settles to the ground. The instrument can be moved via Telekinesis or Mage Hand without interrupting the spell.
